Learning in Nature, About Nature: Our Students at an Erasmus BIP in Slovakia

11

From September 21st to 25th, 2026, a group of our students (Petra Bačić, Karla Erdelji, Sara Januš, Lora Krčmar, Leonarda Sudar, Andrej Vinaj, Petra Tuškan Hepak) participated in an exciting Erasmus BIP titled “Learning About Nature in Nature”, organized by the Faculty of Education of the Catholic University in Ružomberok, Slovakia, under the leadership of Asst. Prof. RNDr. Michal Baláž, PhD.

The programme was entirely dedicated to learning about nature through hands-on work and field activities, and the week was filled with dynamic tasks and exploring local scenery. Students tackled hiking trails and explored the Choč Mountains (Chočské vrchy) and Great Fatra (Veľká Fatra) ranges, including the peak of Sidorovo. They also visited the village of Vlkolínec, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and sampled traditional Slovak cuisine. Furthermore, they had the opportunity to observe a live demonstration of bird trapping and ringing at the Vlachy (Liptovské Vlachy) site, as well as try their hand at ringing birds and practicing proper handling techniques with birds of prey.

This BIP programme is yet another proof that learning is most effective outside the classroom, by combining theory, fieldwork, making new friends, and enjoying nature!
