Studying at The Department Of Biology

ORGANIZATION OF CLASSES AND EXAMS

Organization and delivery of study programs, organization of classes and the rules of studying at the Department of Biology are aligned with the Ordinance on Studies and Studying at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek.

Classes are organized in winter and summer semesters, and are delivered, depending on the course, in form of lectures, seminars, practices and field classes. Teaching schedule is available on the website of the Department of Biology.

At the first class, teachers in charge of each course inform the students about the course content, about the methods of teaching and exam taking. Knowledge assessment is carried out by continuous monitoring of students’ performance. Students may be excused from up to 30% of total number of teaching hours within one course, yet they are obliged to fulfill all student obligations as determined by each course syllabus. During the academic year, each teacher is available for consultations, and the schedule of consultation hours as well as of exams is available at LINK

Exams are organized in three regular exam terms: autumn, winter and summer, each term plans two exam dates for each course. In addition to regular exam dates, exams are also held in additional periods in accordance with the decision of the Department Council. Student register for the exams via the Information System of Higher Education Institutions (ISVU) no later than 5 working days before the scheduled exam. It is not possible to register for the exam later. Exam registration can be cancelled no later than one working day (up to 12 hours) before the scheduled exam.

If the student does not take the exam for which he/she registered, and did not previously cancel the registration, it is considered that he/she has not passed the exam.

The exam within one course can be taken maximum four times a year. A student who does not pass an exam within a course for the fourth time is obliged to re-enroll that course and attend lessons in the following academic year. After re-enrollment of the course, a student has the right to take the exam maximum 4 times, of which the fourth-time exam (i.e. the eighth time in two years) is taken in front of a three-member committee. If a student does not pass the exam after eight attempts, he/she loses the student status at the Department of Biology.

STUDY PROGRESS AND LINEAR PAYMENT MODEL FOR TUITION FEES

By enrolling in the academic year, a student regulates student status and takes over the student obligations within courses held during one semester or a whole academic year. Enrollment in the winter semester is usually completed in September, and in the summer semester in February of each academic year.

In order for students to progress to higher study years of undergraduate and graduate studies, they have to fulfill all obligations determined by respective study program; they have to attend classes regularly, prepare seminar and other papers as planned by each course syllabus, and pass exams that correspond to a minimum of 55 ECTS credits. In this case, the tuition fees are fully covered by the Ministry of Science and Education.

If a student does not pass a certain exam in two years of study, he/she loses the full-time student status.

A student can regularly repeat the study year once, if he/she obtains a minimum of 24 ECTS credits. In that case, he/she shall pay the tuition fee in accordance with the Decision on the linear model of studying at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. Amounts of tuition fees are overviewed in the table on your right hand-side.
