Sub-Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

About the Sub-Department

Sub-Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology deals with ecophysiology of algae as primary producers and investigates ecophysiological processes in aquatic ecosystems, fungal and bacterial plant pathogens and mycoviruses as well as oxidative and antioxidative response of plants and animals to various forms of abiotic and biotic stress.

One of the main research interests of the Sub-Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is improvement of biotechnological production of secondary metabolites by genetic transformation of plants and by raising resistance of plants to pathogens and other environmental stress factors. The Sub-Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology also performs antibacterial tests of newly synthesized or extracted heterocyclic compounds based on coumarins that show a wide spectrum of biological activities.

The aim of the ongoing research is to discover and develop new, more effective and more accessible agents, because previous researches emphasized increased resistance of various pathogens to already existing antimicrobial agents.
